What She Gave – in Memoriam

Deviled eggs snug each other in my spring green plastic bowl,
sitting on white lacey paper doilies as if dressed for a cotillion,
and sprinkled with smoky paprika.

Amalia, our writing friend, would often bring this dish to parties
where we swooned over the old-fashioned treat.
Now she’s gone, but her little tradition lives on.

This comforts me, eggy symbol of our dear artist pal
who loved our celebrations, especially the food choices.
I enjoyed watching her eat it all enthusiastically, like a kid.

She taught us to be free
