May Crowning – by Lynn Carroll Cohen

(for Julien Strong):

You walk away from baby days
diaper dragging
giggling and proud.

Last year, you were not even here.
Now, you are precious in plaid.
Sweet like mint flowers in childhood’s golden verses
while lush purple peonies
lace the lawn and
early morning light strobes
a tiger swallowtail’s flight.

On this May maple sugar-making morning
before you move from babyhood,
sleep one more night tight in moonlight.
